"Kind of miraculous...very useful in diversity training... it opened me up."

--Phyllis Mayo, Director of Training and Diversity, The Seattle Times

"Is it appropriate to integrate spirituality into the management of an organization? Does spirituality make a company more profitable?"

These provocative questions formed the premise of a study published in The Sloan Management Review, Summer 1999, issue. (The Sloan School of Management, MIT.)

As a result of their in-depth interviews with senior executives and HR executives and managers, authors Ian I. Mitroff and Elizabeth A.Denton defined spirituality in the workplace broadly as "the basic feeling of being connected with one's complete self, others, and the entire universe."

The study found, not surprisingly, that while religion was considered an inappropriate workplace subject for discussion, spirituality -- especially when connoting interconnectedness -- was considered an appropriate, even enriching and compelling, subject.

Especially significant was the consensus among participants in the study that expressing one's full potential as a human being, and association with a good or ethical organization, are the top two factors that give people meaning in their work -- not how much money one makes.

The article concludes,

"We need to integrate spirituality into management. No organization can survive for long without spirituality and soul. We must examine ways of managing spirituality without separating it from the other elements of management."

The Integration of the Spiritual Mode

TransFormance Theatre draws upon a rich foundation in personal growth, healing, and meditation/visualization techniques to enhance the interconnectedness, or the spirituality, inherent in an organization. We integrate a profound human dimension into our presentation, seamlessly, and free of any preachiness or dogma -- in a way that is transparent to participants.

Through the use of subtle energy management techniques, such as group and individual meditations and visualizations, TransFormance Theatre rapidly generates coherence and connectedness in groups of any size. This coherence provides a sharp group focus and capability to go -- as a group -- straight to the heart of the human and business issues that are key to the success of an organization.

Subtle Energy Management

Jonathan Rosen Associates and TransFormance Theatre have recently expanded our toolkit to address one of the critical needs of today's business environment -- the ability to implement new initiatives, and embrace new processes and success behaviors, while you continue to provide goods and services to your customers.

This simultaneous multiplicity of abilities requires such an increased amount of energy and awareness that even the most willing people frequently wind up in burnout.

Access to enhanced energy and awareness is clearly a key success factor in the current business environment.

TransFormance Theatre combines principles from quantum physics and living systems science, using them together with parallel energy management techniques from the ancient Vedic culture of India. Through these techniques, the subtle thought energy of a diverse group can be stimulated to transform rapidly into a coherent whole which behaves in a much more aligned, creative and focused manner.

Measurable results of dramatically improved performance with Fortune 500 companies, validating the efficacy of this approach, are included in the case study of CSX Transport/Tropicana Beverages.

Harnessing the Power of Coherent Energy:

A Lesson From Quantum Physics

Over the last 80 years, quantum physics has learned to use the power of coherent energy to huge practical value in the form of lasers, superfluids and superconductors.

Lasers: A laser is simply a coherent light system. Ordinary light is composed of random, incoherent photons or light waves. That is why a flashlight loses the integrity of its beam when focused on an object even just a few feet away.

But through the laser process (light amplification through stimulated emission radiation), a very small number of the photons in the light system (the square root of 1% of the photons) are stimulated to behave coherently, i.e., the light waves peak and trough in a synchronous pattern.

These few coherent photons then automatically pull all the other millions of random, incoherent light waves into alignment with the coherent waves. The result is that the whole system functions like one macroscopic wave function instead of millions of random, incoherent waves. This coherence is what enables lasers to drill through steel, do eye surgery with pin-point accuracy, or measure the distance to the stars.

Superconductors: At room temperature, the molecules in a piece of tin behave in a random, incoherent way. If you form the tin into a circle and pass an electric current through it, after a short time the current will dissipate and cease to circulate around the tin. This is because of the friction created by the random, incoherent behavior of the molecules.

But if you put the same piece of tin in a very cold environment, its molecular structure goes through what is called a "phase transition" to a coherent state. The molecules of the metal actually line up and behave in a coherent way. Then, if you pass a current of electricity through the metal, it will circulate forever because in that coherent state there is no friction to interrupt the smooth flow of the current.

This, of course, is the reason for the big push to develop room temperature superconductors -- an endless flow of frictionless energy.

The inner mechanics of the superconductor effect can be understood in terms of the Laws of Thermodynamics:

1st Law: Energy is constant in the universe.

2nd Law (simplified statement): Over time, most systems tend to run down -- i.e., their entropy level (disorderliness) increases, and they lose their original integrity.

(For example, if you leave food out of the refrigerator it will decompose.)

3rd Law: If you lower the temperature/heat or activity level in a system, entropy (disorderliness) decreases, and coherence increases.

This is the antidote to the 2nd law, and the principle behind superconductors -- by reducing the temperature or internal activity level of the piece of metal -- the random, incoherent, disorderly behavior of its molecules goes through a phase transition to a more coherent, orderly behavior pattern.

Practical Applications

Can the principles of coherent states physics be applied practically to the needs of organizational management, teams, and improved performance? Yes!

By using proven meditation and visualization techniques for lowering the internal activity level of a group of people, they experience a phase transition to a more orderly, coherent and harmonious level of functioning --and this produces rapid, measurable improvement in performance.

Although the use of improv theater, group drumming, singing, meditation/visualization exercises and other multi-modal learning techniques was really "out of the box" for traditional companies like ours, they (TransFormance Theatre) really did accelerate our ability to adopt new behaviors and change our culture in a very short time... the result was an unprecedented success.

Our Techniques

The multi-modal learning tool-kit includes group and individual meditation and visualization tools for:

1) rapidly achieving unified group awareness

2) accessing the infinite reservoir of creative energy which is always available, IF people have the knowledge that it exists, and the tools to hook up to it.

(For example, mankind had the technical ability to build lasers long before we had the knowledge that lasers were possible.)

For years we have watched the computer industry's technical progress grow by orders of magnitude on an acclerating time curve. Yet until now, we have not been able to realize the same kind of productivity gains in the field of human interaction.

So, to make a quantum leap into dramatically improved performance, we need:

a) to know that it is possible, and

b) to cultivate the internal and external skill sets for achieving it.

Meditation and Visualization Techniques

For decades now, athletes have been using mental techniques to improve their physical performance on the field. The basis of the effectiveness of these techniques is that all thought and attention is a form of energy. When that energy is focused in a more subtle and coherent way, the results are more powerful.

It is a natural ability of human beings to do this. It happens occassionally when we have a great idea or inspiration and are actually able to follow it through into action. But the process is usually random and unpredictable.

However, by drawing on the cumulative knowledge of both Western and Eastern cultures on how to manage the subtle energy of human awareness -- we are now able to systematize the process and tools for harnessing the creative energy of our awareness for practical results.

And by working in groups, we are actually able to accelerate and enhance the results through the dynamics of entrainment.

Entrainment

Entrainment is what happens when people do the same focused, repetitive activity together -- their brain waves actually line up with each other and soon begin to behave like one macroscopic wave function (similar to lasers) instead of a large number of incoherent, individual waves.

The phenomenon of entrainment is what makes drumming, marching or singing together so powerful as a way of creating alignment. When entrainment is applied to the even more subtle activity of meditating or visualizing a desired goal together -- it is more powerful.

Why? Because the energy is operating on a more subtle level. This is an important principle to note: The subtler the level of energy we can operate on -- the more powerful the result.

For example, the energy available by operating on the atomic level of matter is much more than what is available on the gross level of matter -- atomic energy versus burning a lump of coal. But it requires the knowledge that this is possible, and the skills and tools to operate on the more subtle level.

Implementation

Implementation and practice of the above tools of subtle energy management is a small and seamless part of the total multi-modal learning process and larger consulting intervention or meeting design available through TransFormance Theatre.

A typical meditation/visualization process would take no more than 20 minutes in a day-long meeting program, and can yield unprecendented results.
